Columbus (1923, B&W, Silent): This extremely rare, beautifully produced 1923 silent film recounts the story of the discoverer of America, with historical accuracy approved by Yale University. Adapted from the book, "The Spanish Conquerors" by Irving Berdine Richman, this well-mounted production features lavish sets and costumes with beautifully composed scenes that resemble historic paintings of the period. Beginning in 1485 with Columbus' desperate years of trying to raise funds, first in Portugal and later Spain, to his perilous voyage where he makes the discovery of the ages. Stars Fred Eric, Paul McAllister; Directed by Edwin L. Hollywood.

The Story of Christopher Columbus (1948, B&W, Sound): This historical sound-era drama presents the life of Columbus. His boyhood fascination with the sea and sailing ships leads to adult years as a sea captain. Convinced the world is not flat, he attempts to gain financing from the courts of Europe for his voyage of discovery. After months at sea, with a mutinous crew ready to turn on their captain, land is sited and Columbus anchors in San Salvador, marking the dawn of a new era in the history of Western Civilization.
