'Cloverfield' keeps the Internet buzzing

If there's one thing that director J.J. Abrams like, it is a good mystery. Luckily, the latest film from his Bad Robot production company has it in spades. If being filmed and prepped under the secret name Valencia wasn't enough, 10 Cloverfield Lane has now set amateur sleuths ablaze thanks to subliminal images embedded in a new theatrical only trailer that played in front of Deadpool last weekend.

So, get this. They supposedly released, at least, five different trailers, one for each of the major theater chains. Each trailer consisted of a different subliminal image that pops up after the film's title for like a nanosecond.

You can read more at the link above, but all of the images are related to the navy or water in some way. As you may recall, the end of Cloverfield (which technically took place before the events shown in most of the film) showed something dropping into the Atlantic Ocean behind them as they rode the Ferris wheel.

As you can imagine, the Internet's answer to Sherlock Holmes, reddit, has been all over this. They have a boatload of threads (no pun intended) devoted to it and I only wish that I had the time to chase this down the rabbit hole.

As it stands, the only thing I did notice from the trailers is a love for the Eifel Tower in Paris.

And no, before you ask, that phone number and website for Emergency Essentials are not clues. It's a real company and the nice young lady that I spoke to said that she's been fielding a number of calls about it each day since the trailer came out.

Thankfully, we won't be in the dark for much longer. 10 Cloverfield Lane debuts in theaters on March 11.
