I have a love/hate relationship with remakes. I hate them and I love the fact that I hate them. Of course, every so often, a remake comes along that just makes too much sense.

RoboCop is a film that I groaned about when I heard of its existence. I enjoyed the original and it was set in Detroit, the city of my youth, so there was a bit of misplaced ownership in the film. How dare they come into my broken down city and remake one of our films?

Well, the reality is that the original RoboCop is set in the not-too-specific future of Detroit, although today's Detroit practically mirrors the dystopian future set in the film, so maybe a remake is in order. After seeing today's new trailer, I'm fully on board with this remake.

There is something about the kitsch of old technology trying to mimic future technology and there's something about actual future technology being able to create, and go beyond, the original dream. I have a feeling that this remake will do just that. Not only will we see a RoboCop that is technologically superior than the original incarnation, it's also one that is more feasible.

And don't get me started on the amazing cast. I always love it when Samuel L. Jackson plays a bad guy. And what's that? Michael Keaton is back and also playing a bad guy? Count me in for sure. RoboCop is set to debut in theaters on February 12, 2014.
