When Goon's teaser trailer hit the Internet back in September after the film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, I was cautiously optimistic. As a huge hockey fan, it doesn't take much to get me excited about a hockey movie up on the big screen, but I wasn't blown away.

Consider me blown.

At the time, I figured that they were holding back the good stuff for when the film debuts in theaters next year. I was wrong. It seems that they have plenty of good stuff that they aren't afraid to put into their trailers.

Yes, that's right as in plural trailers.

It seems that two trailers have found their way online today. The first comes from IGN and it's a red band trailer naturally.

It seems that more and more films are going to the red band route, especially R rated comedies who want to make sure that their core audience realizes that this film isn't some watered-down comedy aimed at the tween demographic. The red band trailer works for Goon because let's face it, hockey really only works in the realm of R rated movies.

Sure, The Mighty Ducks movies were cute and all, but we all know that the "Flying V" was always offsides. Besides, I can tell you that every hockey locker room that I have ever entered isn't for the weak of heart.

The interesting thing is that both of these trailers are distinctly different and separately either one would convince me that Goon is going to deliver the goods. Taken together, they reveal that Goon may indeed have caught lightning in a bottle.

If this is the case, then the gauntlet has been thrown down and the pressure will be on for Kevin Smith to deliver on his last two movies, a pair of hockey movies called Hit Somebody. Knowing Kevin, he will rise to the challenge and his films will be even better because of it.

I never thought I'd see the day where I would see dueling hockey movies of this quality. In the end, we all win as these films look as though they will deliver laughs so guttural that we might mistake them for a punch in the gut from Doug "The Thug" Glatt.

While there's no chance I wasn't going to include both of these trailers in the piece, I certainly had to make sure that people saw the stomach of light joke. All hockey and thuggery aside, it looks like this movie is as well-written as they come.

So toques off to you Jay Baruchel. The trailer promises a February 24, 2012 release, but I think that only applies to Canada. I have yet to see an official U.S. release date yet, but I'm hoping it releases sooner rather than later.
