While I certainly enjoyed the teaser trailer for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, something just wasn't quite right. I think it had to do with the reliance on the dressing in drag gag to sell it to the audience.

The brilliance of the character of Sherlock Holmes isn't his clever disguises or even his quick wit with Watson. No, the true brilliance of Sherlock Holmes was always the game of cat-and-mouse that he and Professor Moriarty enjoyed.

A master of wits and a cunning wit, Holmes was only equaled by his arch-nemesis and this trailer promises that we will finally see the two come face-to-face. While several big name actors were considered for the part of Professor Moriarty, it seems pretty apparent from this brief glimpse that they made the right choice in Jared Harris.

It's rare that I ever claim a trailer to be so good as to approach perfection, but this one is pretty close. It has impressed me so much that I selfishly hope in the back of my head that my daughter holds out in utero for a couple of extra weeks so that I can see this on the big screen opening weekend.

Of course, my wife would most likely kill me if this happens, but it's a tradeoff that I'm pretty sure will be worth it for this highly anticipated sequel. Sierra's due date is December 2 and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows hits theaters on December 16.

I think I've got a chance.

What did you think of the trailer?
