Video: New Mortal Kombat in the works?

While I love my Xbox 360 and PS3, I grew up with the old school console systems. Give me NHL '94 on the Sega Genesis any day of the week.

Growing up in that period, one game that was the bomb (if you'll allow me to toss in some throwback slang) was Mortal Kombat. It was a huge hit both at the arcades (if you were born after 1980 ask someone a little older what an arcade was) and on video game systems.

It had everything that a growing adolescent boy needed to get through those awkward teen years, and plenty of violence to boot. Think of it as Call of Duty with training wheels.

Well, for us "old-timers," there was a video posted today that got our hearts racing. The funny thing is that there's practically nothing known about the origin or veracity of the video. But, it basically has all the earmarks of a big budget feature film movie.

Now yes, there were Mortal Kombat movies made in the 1990s, but those were truly cheesy and thankfully almost forgotten from the consciousness of the public. No, this clip has a serious dark turn about it. At first glance, I immediately had thoughts of The Dark Knight and I got goose bumps.

According to CHUD this is the real deal for an upcoming movie. I mean heck, the 7 plus minute clip has Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan in it. The quality screams major motion picture Summer tentpole pic, but until we get confirmation there will always be doubts.

Next week is E3, the largest game convention of the year and this could simply be an extremely expensive sizzle real shot to promote the announcement of a new video game. If this were the case, I know I'd be disappointed, because I'm ready to get in line for this movie right now. And no, not simply because they kill off Johnny Cage in a bloody fashion.

Watch the clip below and decide for yourselves. Let us know whether you think this is going to be a movie or not or even if it's a good idea to do another movie. I should warn you that the clip contains graphic violence akin to the tone of the original video game.
