Principal Cast

A collection of important speeches by the 37th President of the United States, Richard Milhous Nixon....from talking about his dog to the doghouse! It begins on September 23, 1952, with the infamous "Fund" speech, or, as it is more commonly known, the "Checkers" speech (much to Nixon's disdain.) Having been recently accused of misappropriating campaign funds, then-Senator Nixon took to the airwaves to defend his moral integrity. He went into painstaking detail about his finances, but what the public seized on was his insistence that he'd only kept a single gift from his supporters: a tiny cocker-spaniel dog his daughter named "Checkers." Two decades later, now-President Nixon stepped in front of the cameras once again, this time vehemently denying his involvement in the break-in at the Watergate hotel on the night of June 17, 1972. "I was shocked to learn that employees of the Re-Election Committee were apparently among those guilty," he said with a straight face. We know now that was far from the truth. Nixon announced his resignation from the office of the presidency on August 8, 1974. "I would have preferred to carry through to the finish, whatever the personal agony it would have involved," Nixon told the rapt millions watching on television, "but the interest of the Nation must always come before any personal considerations."
