The fascinating story of the greatest chess player in history. Bobby Fischer was an American chess prodigy, considered by many to be the greatest player of all time. In 1971, he became the first World Chess Federation #1 ranked player. In 1972, he captured the World Championship from Boris Spassky of the USSR in a match publicized as a Cold War confrontation attracting more worldwide interest than any chess championship before or since. Fischer refused to defend his throne until 1992 and won an unofficial rematch against Spassky. Exiled from America, Fischer always felt welcome in Yugoslavia, a chess Mecca. Interviews with people who crossed Fischer's path in many different ways illuminate this fascinating character in a unique way. The film also incorporates rarely seen archival footage from Fischer's early matches to the exile, sudden come back, and bizarre death in Iceland.
