'Deadpool' red-band trailer is saucy

There's a lesson to be learned from the release of the Deadpool red-band trailer. Late last night, Fox released the highly anticipated trailer that got audiences buzzing at Comic Con last month. In the shoddy glow of last call at the bar, the trailer was immediately hailed as revolutionary and the best thing since sliced bread, but in the harsh reality of the early morning sun, perhaps we were a bit rash in our proclamations.

Don't get me wrong, I really did enjoy the trailer, it's just that repeated viewings started to show the cracks at the edges and I'm concerned that it might be a harbinger of bad things to come. Or perhaps I'm just a bit hesitant to believe that Ryan Reynolds finally made a good superhero movie after so many failed attempts. I remember liking the Green Lantern trailer, or not.

I think the biggest problem I have with the trailer is when Ryan Reynolds is not in costume and I'm not just talking about his avocado face either. I realize that Wade Wilson is a bit of a dick and an antihero at best, but why undercut this with his seeming desire to have his girlfriend/wife(?) taken care of in case something goes wrong with his procedure? Perhaps he only becomes a total dick after the procedure.

The bottom line is that I want to see more of the merc with a mouth and less Ryan Reynolds. I know that's a tough line for the studio to toe as they are relying on Reynolds' name and star power to sell the flick to a broader audience. Also, I'm hoping that he breaks the fourth wall in the film like he does in the comics. I'm not just talking about his seemingly running commentary comments, but actually breaking the wall and talking about other Marvel movies perhaps.

I would love nothing more than to hear Deadpool go off on not being part of the true Marvel MCU and being stuck in his own little world. Heck, maybe he could even reference the Spider-Man deal that allowed him to appear in the MCU. I can dream and yes, Fox does have some history now with Disney over the whole Star Wars rights, but I just don't see Fox as having enough gumption to pull off that move.

Regardless, I'm cautiously optimistic that Deadpool will be a hit. I'm just not as giddy as I was last night when the trailer first came online.
